As a design professional I always aim to achieve both form and function with my design selections. Lighting is an important design element! The right light fixture will enhance an interiors styling by adding an additional layer of dimension, texture and color to the space. While it’s obviously important for me to make selections that enhance the beauty of an interior space, it must also be functional for the homeowners needs. A few tips to consider when making your lighting selections…
* Without proper lighting, other design elements in the room may be lost in the shadows
* Layer your light! Create mood and ambiance by incorporating multiple layers of lighting in a space
* Select a fixture that compliments the style, texture, and color of other elements in the space. Don’t forget to consider the surrounding rooms for a cohesive look
* Size does matter!!! One of the most important things to consider is SCALE! For areas that need impact be sure that your fixture is big enough. When in doubt GO BIG OR GO HOME, but if you are going to play up the scale to create a focal point make sure your fixture has interest!
*How do you determine the proper scale? A general rule of thumb is to measure the length and width of the room, add those two numbers together and then convert the total into inches. For example, if your room is 10 feet by 12 feet the fixture should be 22 inches in width/diameter. To increase the visual impact of fixtures in certain areas add at least 6 to 10 inches. When hanging a fixture over a table, be sure that the width/diameter of the fixture is not wider than the table.
